Treatment Detail
At Shree Vishwavrinda Ayurveda & Panchakarma Clinic, led by Dr. Avinash Shimpi, Kati Basti is offered as part of their Panchakarma services, alongside Vamana, Virechana, Basti, and Nasya.
The word “Kati” means lower back, and “Basti” refers to a therapeutic oil retention or medicated liquid therapy.
In Kati Basti, a well of dough is placed on the lower back, which is then filled with warm medicated herbal oil (Taila).
The oil is retained for a specific duration (usually 20–45 minutes), allowing it to penetrate tissues, muscles, and nerves.
Preparation:
The lower back is cleaned, and a dough ring (made of black gram flour) is shaped on the lumbar area.
Oil Pouring:
Warm medicated herbal oil (like Mahanarayan Taila) is poured into the dough ring.
Retention:
The oil is retained for a specific period while gently massaging the surrounding area.
Completion:
After the therapy, the oil is removed, and the area is cleaned.
Kati Basti is particularly effective for:
Lower back pain and stiffness
Sciatica and nerve compression
Muscle tension and spasms
Degenerative disc conditions (early stages)
Arthritis of the lumbar spine
Postural and sedentary lifestyle-related back problems
Additional benefits:
Improves blood circulation and oxygen supply to the lower back
Relaxes muscles and ligaments
Reduces inflammation and pain
Nourishes spinal tissues (Asthi Dhatu)
